From Humble Beginnings

How It All Began

RD's BBQ & Soul Food started long ago. When Robert was 6 years old, he began selling eggs from a cup, which evolved into selling candies. Robert's natural entrepreneurial spirit pushed him further, and he introduced hamburgers; although this got him in trouble with his Mother as he was taking the family's ground beef to sell to his neighborhood customers,  it was worth it.

In 1993, Robert met the Soul Food to his BBQ through a Philly native, Sylvia; similar to Robert, she also developed a love for cooking at a young age by watching her Mother and Grandmother in the kitchen cooking soul food like collard greens, mac & cheese, yams, cornbread, and potato salad. As she got older, she perfected those family recipes by adding new ingredients to cultivate new flavors.

Robert and Sylvia soon began to discuss cooking for people but were unsure if it was possible, "Would people like our food"? Or "How do we begin"? To satisfy their curiosity, they invited a large group of friends over and cooked their best dishes. To their surprise, it was a HIT. People asked for seconds and wanted to know if they could take plates home. From that moment, Robert and Sylvia knew they needed to do this. Robert began learning more about BBQ techniques from his award-winning Pit Master Brother. He went on to compete in competitions such as LA County Sheriff Cook-Off, Cowboy Festival, and the City of Santa Clarita, where he won "Best Ribs."

Since moving to Colorado in 2011, they've participated in The Taste of Colorado, Jazz Festival, 420, Arvarada Blues, Juneteenth, and a weekly staple at the Metro Denver Farmers Market.

By standing on the word of God and serving up good for the soul, RD's BBQ has become much sought after by Event Managers, Universities, and Coloradians.
